In 1718, at an Indian village along the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country, Spain established Mission San Antonio de Valero (later called the Alamo). Today, the city’s name, San Antonio, was derive from those 18th-century Spanish beginnings that predate founding of the United States by more than half a century. The area is home to several military bases, Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and the world famous River Walk. The area has abundant medical facilities, including 3 trauma centers, is recognized as a regional leader in the financial world and has an economic climate that has fostered positive job growth, even in uncertain times. Recent additions to the list of employers include Toyota, Microsoft and an array of small to mid-sized companies.
